Franco Negri, founded Casa Ecologico as a retail outlet in Cusco that worked with over 200 weavers and farmers to produce fair trade, organic and hand made products. In 2005, he helped form an association of native honey producers with sponsorship from the World Bank. Since then, his business has grown to work with farmers in several regions producing quinoa, kañiwa, and amaranth, as well helping to establish APEL, an association of 22 organic farmers in the Lamay region outside of Cusco who produce much of the organic produce for the Cusco restaurants and several varieties of quinoa.
The philosophy of Casa Ecologico is to work directly with the farmers to help improve cultivation techniques, encourage organic farming, teach business development skills (how to set sustainable prices), and to improve their cash flow through partial prepayments. In certain instances, he will provide the farmers with seeds and pay an engineer to oversee the process. At this time, they have a well-established system for the cultivation of quinoa, and are working to establish a similar system for kañiwa and amaranth.
All of their products are processed in 3rd party processing facilities, that are gluten-free.
